Fitness Tracker Craze

How many people do you see these days sporting some type of fitness tracker on their wrists? I will admit that I am definitely hooked on mine!

I have been faithfully wearing a Nike Fuelband for four years. I love that I could look at my wrist and see where I was with my “fuel”, steps taken, calories burned, and hours won. Even though to this day, I still have no idea what the “fuel” is and how it is calculated. When I tried to look it up all I really found out was that it definitely had something to do with your activity and movement, but the exact formula wasn’t available so it is hard to equate that to a known quantity. All I knew is that when I hit my goal, I feel as though I have accomplished something.

Monday I took off my Fuelband and upgraded to the new Fitbit Blaze! I took my time researching what I would want in my new fitness tracker. Let’s be honest, we have all seen the Fitbit commercials!  They are catchy and I really want the one man and woman to start working out together!!  But then I started watching Biggest Loser and they all were working out with the Garmin.  I loved how they had the board behind them that had all the information!  That got me very excited about the Garmin Vivoactive. It seemed as though it had everything I thought I wanted except a heart rate monitor. But I thought, with the other available options, I would be fine without the HR monitor. But just when I thought my decision had been made, I read that Fitbit was coming out with the new Blaze. It had almost everything that the Garmin had, but it came with the HR monitor. I was sold! Besides the HR monitor, the only other differences that really jumped out at me were the GPS and the waterproof feature that the Garmin had. I figured that I don’t go running outside so the GPS wouldn’t matter, and even if I did, the Blaze has GPS capabilities if you have a cell phone, and let’s be honest, who leaves home without their cell phone these days? The waterproofing didn’t make a difference to me either. I don’t swim and I take off my tracker when I shower. So, to me the choice was now clear! The Blaze will be my new fitness tracker!

I was so excited that I had finally come to my decision!! Now comes the waiting!  I have chosen a tracker that hasn’t been released yet.  I kept checking the Best Buy website to see when it was available at our local store. And then it happened! I went home, grabbed my husband and ran to the store. We got home and I went into the bedroom and started my set-up!

So here I am on day three and I love it!  I love that it has multi-sport functions!  I do Piyo and Tae-Bo and in the past, I didn’t get any credit towards any type of goal when I do those.  But my Blaze allows me to change it to Yoga or Kickboxing and track my workout through the specialized tracking feature that knows what kind of workout you will get in each individual category!  AWESOME!  I love the heart rate monitor too!  I don’t know why I feel the need to constantly check my HR, but I do.  I always check it when I get done with my workout to see where I am, but while sitting at my desk – probably not necessary – but, why not!  It’s a flick of my wrist to see it!

What I don’t like it seeing how many times I wake up in the middle of the night.  The last three nights I have gotten around 7 hours sleep with 10-17 restless periods and several moments when I woke up!  What?!  Who knew?!  I guess I know I don’t always sleep good, but seeing it on a chart doesn’t make me feel good.  Maybe it should give tips to sleeping peacefully and restfully all through the night.  Then maybe I could figure out a way to improve that particular statistic?

The hardest part of this transition is going to be going from tracking my Fuel to tracking my steps.  My Fuel goal was 2500, which sounds a whole lot easier to achieve than taking 10,000 steps.  I have reached over 10,000 steps each day so far, so I’m happy with that.  As I write this, about half way through the work day I have 5602 steps – so a little over half way to my goal.  That is about 2.28 miles and 1346 calories burned.  Perfect!  And just in case you are wondering, my heart rate is 62!

It’s just me and my opinion!

Have a great day!
